Easy Clean Windows
Did you know that our new windows have a button that makes them easy to clean? I have to admit I didn’t even know this was here until someone showed me! Here’s our quick guide to keeping your lovely new windows looking like new.
Washing Your Windows
When you have new windows fitted you notice how clean the glass is! Even if you’re great at washing your windows nothing beats the bright clean look of new windows. Sadly we all know it won’t last, with the British weather being what it is the rain will cause streaks to appear. When you’re ready to wash your windows there are several ways to get them clean. In the past people used vinegar and brown paper to wash glass, this was to get rid of grease, but we would recommend warm soapy water otherwise your house might smell like a chippy! You could employ a window cleaner, but if you’d prefer to tackle this job yourself we have a neat trick to make the job easy and safe, with no need to get the ladder out.
The first thing to do is remove anything on the window sills and any blinds or curtains that stop you getting easy access to the windows. It sounds obvious but it’s easier to remove everything so you have room to work.
Next you will need a bowl of warm water with a small amount of washing up liquid in it, a sponge or cloth for washing and a dry cloth. You will also find it easier if you have a squeegee to remove as much water as possible from the glass.
I would start with the outside of the glass, as when you’re using the easy clean setting for the windows you might put your hands on the inside of the glass to click the window back into position when you’re finished. To access the easy clean mode open your window fully and look down at the inside mechanism. You will see a grooved metal tab marked easy clean.
Most windows have two of these, one at the top and one at the bottom. You need to press both of these grooved tabs (top and bottom) down then you can open the window fully as the mechanism will be able to slide further along. You can see this in the images below, the first is the window without the easy clean tabs depressed, and the second shows how far the window can open once you’ve activated them.
This makes the window very easy to clean! Wash the glass with a wet cloth or sponge, and dry thoroughly. If you have a squeegee work from the top of the glass to the bottom. Don’t ever reach too far out of a window – be aware you could fall!
When you’ve finished cleaning you need to click the window back to it’s original position. You do this by putting one hand on the handle and the other opposite on the frame. pull the hinge side back to where it was originally, you might find it easier to fully close the window. When the tabs have re-engaged you should hear a small click. Now when you open the window it should look like the picture above on the left. Make sure both tabs have clicked back and the pane is straight.
Now you can wash the inside of your windows with clean water. If you would like to wash the window frames this should also be done with warm soapy water. Please don’t use anything abrasive on your window frames as you can damage the surface.
