Although it’s been a mild autumn so far the changing of the leaves and the clocks going back are reminders that winter isn’t too far away. If you’re worried about your heating bills, or would just like to make your home cosier this year there are plenty of ways to get your home ready for colder weather.

Clean Gutters

As autumn leaves can clog gutters it’s a good time to clean them out to make sure the winter weather won’t cause any problems. If you feel your gutters need more than a good clean out they can be replaced. Leaky gutters can cause damp problems in the rest of your house. This is a job you could do yourself, but if you’d like to get a professional in we can replace fascias, soffits and guttering to ensure they will stay looking good and working well for years to come. The great thing about replacement fascias, soffits, guttering and cladding in uPVC is that it’s almost maintenance free, no more painting!

Bleed and Clean Radiators

It’s a good time to make sure your heating system is running as efficiently as it can. Simply bleeding your radiators to remove any air that’s got into the system and using a radiator cleaning brush to clean in between the metal parts of your radiators will ensure as much heat as possible heats your room.

Insulate

It’s worth checking you have enough insulation in your loft and around your water pipes. An unisulated loft will lose 25% of the heat in your home, and it’s easy to buy insulation. If your loft has no damp problems you can get mineral wool insulation from most DIY shops, it’s not super expensive, and will pay for itself within a couple of years in savings on heating bills. Keeping heat in will keep your bills down, and make your home a nicer place to be.

An efficient front door will also help to keep heat in your home. Your front door could be responsible for up to 20% of the heat lost from your home. A good quality composite door will eliminate draughts and be more insulated, keeping your hall warmer. Draught Proof

Draught proofing your windows and doors can make a big difference to the temperature of your home. Replacing old windows with highly thermal efficient double or even triple glazing will make your home feel a lot warmer. If you can’t afford replacement windows you can plug holes and replace any blown glass panels, we can replace these for you. Just replacing glass panels will help to keep heat in.

Warm Roof

If you want to use your conservatory thoughout the winter you may find a glass roof just doesn’t retain enough heat. We offer warm roof as a replacement for your glass roof. This is an insulated roof system that looks like a tiled roof, but it’s strong and light enough to be used as a replacement for a glass roof. Great for making your conservatory warm throughout the year.

Replacement Period Windows

If you are lucky enough to live in a period property you will enjoy the look of your period windows. The downside to these original wooden windows are draughts, maintenance required and high energy bills. It’s important to consider carefully when making changes to your windows, as the look of these windows will change the character of the property. The first thing to consider before making changes is whether the building is in a conservation area or listed. This will limit the work you’re allowed to do to the front of your house. It’s important to know the rules before you start, so you don’t waste time and money on changes you will have to remove later. If this is the case you will have to repair existing windows or replace them with wooden or metal windows made in the same way as the originals. This will be expensive, and the new windows will not be as energy efficient as a double glazed window.

Sash Windows

If your home isn’t listed or in a conservation area, but you want to preserve the character whilst benefiting from energy saving there are more options available to you.

Keeping the Heat in

Our A+ rated windows and doors are designed to keep the heat in. In winter the energy efficient coated glass retains the warmth within the home, it also allows radiant from the sun in to add extra free heat. If you have older windows and you don’t want to replace them there are other things that you can do to stop heat loss from your home.

The most obvious way to stop heat loss is to fill any gaps. Ill fitting windows and doors will loose heat quickly. If you fill the gaps with draught excluder or filler it will help to keep the heat in. Obviously if you buy new double glazing you won’t have this problem, as double glazed windows are sealed units they will cut draughts and minimise heat loss. They won’t rot like traditional wooden windows, so you won’t have problems in the future with gaps leading to draughts.

Older external doors may also benefit from an old fashioned draught excluder. Remember when old people use to have handmade draught excluders in the shape of sausage dogs? They were trying to minimise the heat loss from the door by blocking gaps.

Another way to keep your home warmer is to fit heavy or thermally lined curtains across windows and doors. The idea here is to trap cold air next to the window, keeping the warmer air inside the house. Double glazing works in a similar way, just far more efficiently. The gap between the panes of glass is filled with a gas that is a good insulator, keeping heat inside and cold outside. Obviously these measures are never going to be as efficient as having new double or even triple glazing fitted. Good double or triple glazing will make your home more energy efficient, and make it a nicer place to be! Without draughts you control the temperature of your home, so there are no more cold spots.
